biglads.org is dedicated to my father, Jim Griffin, who would check it every single day to see if I had uploaded something new. Without him and his support this site would not exist; he is sorely missed.
"And so Gilgamesh wept bitter tears, saying: 'He who was my companion, through adventure and hardships, is gone forever...' " Jean-Luc Picard, Darmok
"And I think of the thunder as the voice of my father, which does not frighten me. It's the only way he knows how to speak." Joe Frank, A Death in the Family
Q: What's up with that skull picture/logo/graphic? Is that a swastika?
A: That's two questions, but they're both related and both frequently asked so they'll occupy one spot here. The American flag skull is the book cover to Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's 1973 book
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72, illustrated by Ralph Steadman but with the book cover designed by Thomas W. Benton.
I guess due to some particularity about the copyrighting of book covers at the time, the publisher failed to properly attribute the book cover itself,
and so that graphic automatically entered the public domain, leaving it free to be used and abused by the everyman.
As for the swastika part, yeah, it is a swastika. I think the intent behind the use of the swastika is pretty clearly not in the interests of glorifying Nazism, but this position is a controversial one and has gotten me banned from a few outlets.
